This picture shows a STOVL CV(F) using JSF VSTOL aircraft. The jump-ramp
can clearly be seen at the bow of the ship. The larger size of the carrier
allows for more aircraft to be stored on deck and because there is no need for
catapults there would be a reasonably large hangar too,
This picture shows a similar configuration to the above
picture, only slightly narrower. Note the position of the island structure,
well-aft to permit the maximum amount of aircraft positioning both fore and
aft of it.
Another contestant in the "design the ugliest ship in
the world contest!" This one is tremendously awful, although it does have
some interesting concepts. By placing the island structure in the middle
of the ship, there is the possibility of two runways. Of course, only
one aircraft could be launched at the same time, but it would permit
a staggered-start and thus a faster launch time. Since it is a STOVL carrier
there is no real risk that the aircraft would hit the island structure since
they land vertically. All the storing of aircraft is at the stern of the
ship but having two runways limits the number of aircraft that can be stored
on deck. All in all this is an ugly and impracticable design and one that
will hopefully never be put into practice.
